Christopher Hibbertââ¬â¢s The English: A Social History, 1066-1945, harshly reflects child labor. The author uses graphic details to portray the horrible work environment that the children, sometimes as young as four and five, were forced to work in. Hibbert discusses in much detail the conditions the children work in, the way they are mistreated, and what was done to prevent child labor. à à à à à The children work in various conditions, suffering numerous injuries. They are subjected to suffocating steam, heat, flying hot metal, and the ââ¬Å"unhealthiest kind of grinding knownâ⬠(595). The workers were not only subjected to poor working conditions, but being mistreated within them. However, working conditions slowly but surely improved. Their diets became better. It became illegal to employ children in certain circumstances. Laws were passed so children were not working such long hours. They were even given off for holidays.

Her different point of view is clearly displayed when she rejects Walter Cunningham, a poor boy, saying, ââ¬Å"...they're good folks. But they're not our kind of folks" (Lee 224). Aunt Alexandra, believing that the Cunninghams are beneath the Finchesââ¬â¢ economic level, ignores Scoutââ¬â¢s aspect of friendship toward Walter disliking him "because-he-is-trash" (Lee 224). She is regardless of the Cunninghamsââ¬â¢ hard work to pay back Atticus in ââ¬Å"the only way [they could]â⬠(Lee 21). An example of this racial prejudice is found Scoutââ¬â¢s words saying that ââ¬Å"[Tom is] just a Negroâ⬠(Lee 199). Scoutââ¬â¢s words are evidences to the unsafe society for kids to develop. Another example is found while Aunt Alexandra is convincing Atticus to dismiss Calpurnia, although Atticus tells her that ââ¬Å"Calpurniaââ¬â¢s not leaving this house until she wants toâ⬠(Lee 137).

Journal: ââ¬Å"Sun in My Skinâ⬠Robert Johnson The poem ââ¬Å"Sun in My Skinâ⬠is a poem that comprises of a Bahamian man who expresses a love for his Bahamian culture. He portrays what it truly means to be ââ¬Å"Bahamian. Johnson shows love of his culture when he states ââ¬Å"But in my brash vibrating arm the cowbell dancesâ⬠Also he shows pride in our country considering the state we are in when he states ââ¬Å"And when I go to banquets, the food donââ¬â¢t agree with meâ⬠.The main focus of the poem is how the writer exquisitely expresses his way of life and how being Bahamian makes him proud. Johnson feels as though being Bahamian is not all about being rich, but to stand up rightfully as people maintaining a peaceful and tranquil Bahama land. The poem also talks about ââ¬Å"rich and cultivatedâ⬠which means Johnson feels no matter what state, race or situation our country is in, nothing makes him less of a Bahamian. I feel as though the poem is a commemoration of our culture and way of life.How as people, we must fend for ourselves rightfully as ââ¬Å"Bahamiansâ⬠. I also feel that Johnson had a sense of excitement towards the poem; expressing himself effectively. Other significances are the sun which reflects on our beautiful Bahama land and the cowbells signify the love for our culture and the excitement it brings to the lives of many.
